FabFilter Pro-Q4 Review: The Ultimate EQ for Modern Production

I'm a self-confessed EQ ninja, and the new FabFilter Pro-Q4 is the most comprehensive EQ I've ever used. It covers every angle of EQ you could possibly want. Whether you're doing subtle mastering moves or aggressive sculpting, Pro-Q4 handles it all. As someone who started with big old analog EQs and switched to digital decades ago, Pro-Q4 is genuinely the best investment you can make in learning EQ inside out.

Why One EQ Plugin Matters

My best advice to any engineer, even those with five or more years of experience, is this: download the FabFilter pack and use only that on everything you do for the next year. Knowing one set of tools inside out will totally change your ability as an engineer. You'll develop ear training and instincts that no plugin collection can give you. You'll understand the personality of that EQ, its quirks, its strengths. When you jump between 10 different EQs, you never develop that relationship.

Pro-Q4 is that plugin worth committing to. It's flexible enough for anything you need, powerful enough to handle subtle or aggressive moves, and intuitive enough that you can work fast.

What's Inside Pro-Q4

The new update completely covers every angle of EQ. You've got spectral EQ for subtle, surgical changes. It's similar to Soothe but represents the next level for transparent EQ work. You've also got dynamic EQ for movement in the track. Traditional EQ with powerful broad shifts rounds out the toolset. In the past, you could only do standard EQ. Now you can do all three in one plugin.

The spectral mode is where things get interesting. Instead of fixed frequencies, you're identifying tizzy elements and removing them surgically. You can target the exact problem frequencies without affecting clean content. This is invaluable on vocals where you want presence without harshness.

Dynamic EQ lets you process only when certain content is present. Lift the vocal brightness but only when the vocal comes in. Cut the kick mud but only during the kick. This gives you movement and musical responses that static EQ can't achieve. You're not always on, you're reacting to the mix.

Practical Example: Vocals and Clarity

Let me show you the different processing types by working on a vocal. First, using standard EQ, I lifted the vocal around 3dB for brightness. Then I switched to spectral mode and brought down the tizzy stuff, like Soothe does. This combines the lift with automatic harshness removal. The vocal is brighter but without the digital sting.

Next I cut the sides around low frequencies to mono the bass down and tighten the image. I used dynamic EQ on the kick drum so it smacks harder when it plays. In traditional EQ, you'd just boost the kick all the time. With dynamic EQ, it gets aggressive only when the kick is present.

Then I lifted the guitars on the outside with a high shelf at 16K, making that dynamic as well for movement in the top end. I added spectral EQ in the low mids around 300Hz to bring notes up as they come in, adding movement. Everything I did was gentle. No cut was more than a few dB. Mastering requires restraint, but Pro-Q4 makes that restraint musical instead of transparent.

The Tone Controls That Matter

Pro-Q4 includes a tone knob with three settings: clean, subtle, or warm. The warm setting sounds really nice. It gives character and flavor without obvious coloration. You can hear it working on the vocal, adding presence and musicality. This is the kind of feature that separates good EQ plugins from great ones. It's not essential, but it's thoughtful design.

Changing stereo width on specific bands is powerful. You can widen certain frequencies while keeping others narrow. This lets you build space and focus in one plugin. Shelves, bell curves, notches, dynamic modes, spectral processing. Pro-Q4 does it all and does it beautifully.

When You Need This Plugin

If you're new to production, Pro-Q4 might seem overwhelming. Start with standard EQ only until you understand basic concepts. Once you're comfortable, the spectral and dynamic modes become game-changing. If you're already mixing or mastering, Pro-Q4 is the upgrade you should buy. You'll use it on almost every track.

Buy the FabFilter pack if you can. You'll use Pro-Q4 on everything. Pro-L2 for limiting and metering. Saturn for saturation. Together, they're the foundation of professional mixing and mastering. I use FabFilter on maybe 90 percent of my sessions. That's not an exaggeration.
